The brand originated in Cuba, and there is still a picture of the Cuban factory on the box of today's Henry Clays. We're not sure how a Cuban cigar became named after a US Politician, but back in the 1800's we were still friends! This was our first experience with any of the Henry Clay products. We choose one of the new Henry Clay Habana 2000 line of cigars, all of them sporting the ever-vaunted Habana 2000 wrapper from Nicaragua. The Mirabelle is a box-pressed robusto, that at first impressions looks like a man sized cigar, ready to fill your every cigar smoking need. There's no messing around here, standard band, nothing fluffy, just a generous sized, box-pressed robusto. The wrapper is impressive, with a solid sheen. Maybe this will be one of the few H2000 wrapped cigars that lives up to the marketing? You just can't find a legitimate complaint about how this cigar dresses. Once lit, you get a deep plume of smoke, and a somewhat musty aroma. People seemed to still be impressed, as "spicy" and "earthy" were two of the adjectives used describing the aroma. A few of the reviewers commented on an aggressive taste during the first few draws, although it seemed to mellow and become consistent soon after. We did have a couple cigars develop some hot spots and uneven burns, one so much that the reviewer deemed it "DOA". High marks for construction can't be given, it seemed hit or miss on whether you would get a solid cigar for the complete smoke. A loose draw was noticed as well. A strong aftertaste was also brought up. Sadly the aftertaste seemed to be lonely, as it hung around for quite some time. One reviewer commented "Listerine may have met its match in the aftertaste of the Henry Clay Mirabelle." Taking in to account the aftertaste and construction issues we ran in to, this cigar seems to fall in the middle of the pack. The Habana 2000 wrapper still concerns us as they seem to have in common a fairly pungent aftertaste. Although beautiful to look at, the faults started showing up soon after lighting. We reserve high hopes for the Henry Clay line of cigars, this one has a chance if your lucky enough to get one that was made with care. If you choose to give it a try, remember it's hit or miss.
