Repeat the mantra, "Not all Cuban cigars are a sure thing" over and over when buying Cuban cigars. We know we were loaded with quite a few Cubans this month, but it's just the way the reviews came due. Nothing was intended, implied, or… well, intended or implied, we just had three Cuban work their way in the cycle. We're starting to wish they hadn't.
The Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No. 1 is an oft mentioned, and seemingly popular Cuban smoke. A nice size cigar for any occasion, it fit the bill as a workhorse of the Cuban repertoire. Coming unbanded, it fits the working man's image for a cigar.
This was one of the cigars I as lead reviewer, did not try. After seeing the reviews come in, I had to see what was going on. What we saw was five reviews that, at best, rated this cigar as average. Average! For the love of Ruby, aren't all Cuban cigars severely dominant over anything from anywhere else? What happened, did the three staff and two guest reviewers all have bad days when they lit this puppy up? Were all the planets misaligned? Was this a conspiracy along the lines of the JFK assassination? This was a Cuban cigar for heavens sake, and I'll be damned if we're gonna…whoops the ash just fell on my laptop.
That sums it up folks, the ash just prematurely fell like a 16 year old over Brittany Spears. Since I didn't believe, I lit up while doing the review. 15 minutes in, and the cigar is 1/3 gone…you can hear it burn. How I wish these were counterfeit. If this continues to be the case, we're closing our Canadian bureau!
Starting at the top, the ash was weak, weak like our choices for President. (Where's Jesse Ventura when you need him?) But oh, the construction…"felt like Charmin" was the quote from a guest reviewer familiar with the finer aspects of toiletry products. "Would make good packing material" from another tester. Getting the idea?
Screw construction, if it tastes good, who cares how it's made, or how it burns? "Was that a cigar or a cigarette" from the same "powder room" experienced guest. "Fidel, quit shaking hands, and start monitoring the cigar industry" was another insightful first hand quote. Actually a couple of folks noted a consistent, yet mild taste, not all distasteful, but lacking personality like a Rams opponent lacks defense.
Anyway, giving this cigar an average score would have been generous, giving it a bomb would not have been all fair either. Being Cuban, it probably suffered from high expectations. Ultimately, for our American readers, feel better that you have some fantastic cigars at your disposal without having to go to Cuba for this one. For Ruby, who belittles our site for lack of "CCW" (Cuban Cigar Worship), here's another reason to hate us.
A spade is a spade boys, chalk it up to a bad batch if you like…this ain't one of the Worlds better cigars if our box was any example.
