What the heck is a “Boveda”? If you really think about it, doesn’t it sound like something in your car’s engine? You know something along the lines of” “Sorry Mr. Shoberg, but this one’s going to be expensive. You see your Boveda failed, and everyone knows once the Boveda goes, the alternator is going to follow.”
Actually, Boveda is a company that makes these funky little humidification packets that caught our interest. Boveda is a product from Minnetonka, Minnesota based Humidipak. According to the Humidipak website:
“2-Way Humidity Control is the foundation of Humidipak, our patented 2-way humidity control technology that eliminates the humidity spikes and even the slightest fluctuations in humidity, preventing your cigars from losing any oils, character or flavor.”
We figured we would take the test, so we purchased 30 of the 72 degree Boveda humidification packs from an on-line retailer. They arrived in three days via priority mail.
We used three different tests for the Humidipak Boveda.
- Test ONE was a Padron 1926 Anniversary Humidor that had not had anything in it, cigars or humidification devices, for over two months.
- Test TWO was a Zero Halliburton Ambassador humidor that had been likewise dry and empty for a long period of time.
- Test THREE was a larger desktop humidor measuring approximately 2ft long by 1ft wide, by 6 inches deep.
Keep in mind, none of these humidors were seasoned before tossing in some cigars (already humidified), and the Boveda packets. The recommended amount is 1 packet, plus one additional packet for every 50 cigars. For example in a humidor with 50 cigars, you would use two packets, 100 cigars you would use three, etc..
Test ONE had three Boveda packs in it, even though it only had about 25 loose cigars. It took 10 days for the humidity to gradually stabilize at 71%, but once it got there, it stayed extremely precise. About three months later, the original packs were drying up and we needed to add a couple new ones. Once seasoned, the manufacturer suggested amount of packs is pretty accurate. Note: Boveda does have a special pack designed to hasten seasoning of a humidor.
Test TWO had one Boveda pack in a sealed Zero Halliburton Ambassador. Of course the Zero is practically airtight, so we thought this would work pretty quick. It took a couple days, but the humidity stabilized quickly, and stayed at 70% according to the gauge in the Zero.
Test THREE…your getting the drift by now. We did this a little differently, and helped the Boveda along with a large Paradigm passive humidification device. The humidor and its 70 cigar contents seasoned quickly, taking only 7 days to set up at 70%. It has not swayed since, and the packs are just now starting to dry up.
In summary, the Boveda packs are little godsends. Not only will they humidify a decent sized desktop humidor for about $12 per three months, they completely take the worry out of checking the water supply all the time. You can also forget about the 50/50 solutions, and all the rest of the fun that comes along with the passive humidification. You can also use these little guys when you travel. Slap one in a Ziploc bag, and you have an instant travel humidor. We even used some of the ones that were drying up, and they did the job in the much more airtight confines of a 1 gallon Ziploc bag with ease. An A+ for the Boveda.
