Joya de Nicaragua Celebracion Consul
Can the JdN Celebracion Consul keep up with its big brother the Antano line?

Home

Based on the success of the Antano line, and the “Commodore –esque” name “Celebracion”, we were planning on some big things from this cigar.

Joya de Nicaragua Celebracion is a recent premium from the makers of Joya de Nicaragua Antano 1970 – one of the hottest, strongest smokes on the market. Using the same Nicaraguan grown Habana-seed fillers and binders utilized by Antano, the Celebracion sports a smooth, aged Habana-seed Criollo wrapper leaf.

The Celebracion line comes in 5 different sizes, for the sake of this review we looked at the Robusto, a 4 ½ x 52 cigar named the "Consul".

The Celebracion sports a reddish tan wrapper that makes a smoker think “spice”. The feel and general exterior construction of the cigar passes the grade. No issues upon match to leaf either, burn and draw are satisfactory, nit spectacular.

Of course flavor is where the rubber hits the road in a cigar review. There aren’t a lot of repeat buyers of a well constructed cigar that provided reason to tongue scrape.

Expecting much, receiving little, none of our reviewers were in love with this cigar.

“Rough & harsh w/some sweetness to the sinus. The harshness won't go away & picks up a dry, hay-like grassiness in the finish. It smoothes out some at the halfway point & the dry hay aspect recedes to be replaced by a bit of toast. Alas, this doesn't last & the hay-like finish dominates again. The last 1/3 some nice, high, sweet, tingly, "pops" in the nose.”

The above quote was evident of much that we received. Nobody crucified the Joya de Nicaragua Celebracion, but there also were not a bunch of guys lining up in the “box a month” club.

“Some buzz factor is evident. Not ready for the sugar yet, but there is some sting in this little stick!”

So that’s good, the little robusto was starting to fight back. So a giant sigh of mediocrity on the Joya de Nicaragua Celebracion Consul. We’ll end up giving it a “C”, but when its big brother the Antano gets grades like he does, you expect a bit more from the younger sibling.
