The third in our expanding foray into blind reviews was the Mayorga Crystal Round. This Mayorga is unique on two fronts, first it's not box pressed, and second, it's under glass, both different than the other members of the Mayorga family. This Toro is a dark looking masculine cigar, leading many of our reviewers into expectations of thick smoke, juicy steaks and numb lips. We know, the cute little glass slipper surrounding this cigar is special, and leads to nothing even remotely manly. Remember, our reviewers received this cigar sans glass and band. What we continued to find when pre-light investigations ensued, was a well made cigar that was firm to the touch. No dryness, no flaking, no superiority complexes from having its own glass encased world. The lighters broke out quickly, and folks lunged to get this cigar lit. Unfortunately, most were met with a somewhat strong aroma that wasn't described by many as pleasing. "This guy wanted to smother me! Plenty of smoke, but not what I could classify as enjoyable. Pretty much in line with a run of the mill inexpensive cigar." Our favorite descriptive, "spicy" was flung around with abandon when describing the Mayorga Crystal Round. If you can take one thing from this review...take spicy. Often times "spicy" is accompanied by other favorable adjectives, but in this case that didn't happen. "The Mayorga Crystal Round started out very strong with some bitterness. I would call the taste harsh for the first half of this cigar. The harshness was accompanied by some spiciness that got stronger towards the center of the cigar. At the midpoint, the taste smoothes out, the spiciness continues, and an earthy taste appears. The second half of the smoke continued with big earthy, spicy tastes to the end." Most folks pegged this cigar on the strong side, comments we don't always hear about Mayorga. Nobody was overwhelmed, but we think you have a decent three dollar cigar.
