An old favorite of ours was dug out from the back of the humidor, and we figured worthy of a review. The Romeo y Julieta Vintage III Robusto harkens from the days when these cigars were actually tough to find. Why were they hard to get you ask? Simply said they were good back then, at least that's how we remember it. If you haven't guessed it yet, the cigars we reviewed were pre-Tabacalera taking over the manufacture of these little beauties. They also had been hiding in the back of our humidor for a year and a half. Unfortunately, even this older version of the RyJ Vintage III garnered reviews that were all over the board. We had 3 guest reviewers try this puppy out (yup, we sometimes pick more than one guest reviewer per month!) and of the three, one individual gave it an overall rating of A-, another a B, and a third a C-. Add those reviews to the five from our staff, and we'll try and muddle all the way through this. Most everyone liked the fresh look of this cigar. It seemed a tad light, but the tobacco used seemed to be absent of flaws. The size is a perfect Robusto, people seemed to like the 4 1/2 by 50 size of the Robusto. Nobody doubted the look or construction of the cigar, and it only prompted to a pleasant thought towards smoking. Taste was everywhere, we had comments that it "tasted to young", keeping in mind it had aged almost two years before smoking, and that it was "the definition of what cigar smoking should be". With those kind of comments, what can you deduce, other than the consistency of these RyJ's could probably use a little work! Many reviewers did note the cigar started fresh, and turned sour and bitter towards the middle. I tended to agree with those who mentioned the bitterness in the taste. I've had the luxury of smoking over a dozen of these recently, and they have been all over the board, you can get some good ones, but more often than not you leave disappointed. If you come across an old box of Romeo y Julieta Vintage III's, it may be best to leave them alone, you just can't be sure what your getting.
