Bling, Bling! Yes, it’s Las Vegas Baby! Home to the World Series of Poker; Steve Wynn’s newest hotel, the Wynn Las Vegas Resort; and no state income tax. This year, Las Vegas is also home to the 2006 Retail Tobacconist Dealer’s Association (RTDA) Convention and Trade show. The show will be held at the Sand Expo Convention Center adjacent to the Venetian Hotel and Resort. Top25Cigar will attend the show for the fifth year to report on the general status of the premium cigar industry. As we walk the 200,000 sq. ft tradeshow floor, we’ll be stopping at as many of the 1200 or so vendor booths as we can. We’ll be talking to tobacco growers, cigar makers, importers, distributors, and retail tobacconists. We’ll be looking for the latest cigars and cigar accessories from companies large and small, well known and barely known. We’ll listen for industry trends and surprises and give our honest opinions about the best (and the worst) the show has to offer. The purpose of our reporting will be, as usual, to provide as much information as we can to the cigar smoking public. One last note. Most cigar smokers know that Las Vegas may be the most cigar friendly city left in America. As the wave of anti-smoking legislation continues to sweep the country, I’m sure we will hear about the latest round of battles set to begin in California. Proposition 86 is set to nearly triple the tobacco tax on some products. You may recall the first statewide anti-smoking legislation was passed in California in 1998 with many cities following suit in successive years. We anticipate Prop 86 discussions will be a major topic at the show and we’ll do our best to keep you informed about this important issue.
