Easily the best cigar of the Opus line, it shares the Opus inconsistency plague. When they are good, however, they are phenomenal - easily on par with the best habanos.

The whole line of the Opus X is overrated to the point of no return. The prices on these are ridiculous for a Dominican cigar. Plus, Dominican tobacco is just plain disgusting. Compare the tobacco to a Cuban and you'll ask yourself why you've ever bothe

"Best non-cuban"
This is the best non-cuban cigar made. I've smoke a half dozen no issues with the draw all have the light brown color, no color patches. The flavor is oily leathery, coffee with a hint of spice.

"This Stick Has A Kick"
This one is interesting. Excellent construction- firm cigar, great draw. The flavor profile is very complex. Leather is definitely the strongest component, with woody and toasty undertones. At some times, though, the cigar can be sour and unpalatable. It is a strong smoke, and the flavor lingers on the palate for hours.

"Fine smoke indeed"
WOW! this is one fine smoke in my book. Got it for 20 bucks 7 months ago and decided to hold it till New Years evening. SO I lit her up last night and I was not let down one bit. These OpusX cigars are one fine smoke. Perfect draw and burn with excepitional flavor. Highly recommended. Still now worth 30 bucks though.

"A Letdown"
I've been sitting on this for 3 years and have smoked many an Opus in between. For some reason, I didn't love one, though. Construction, draw and burn are what you'd expect but the flavor department was lacking. It was a bit mellow fro an Opus, perhaps from the aging - but I didn't mind that. The problem was the finish, which was papery and dry. Still, there were nice flavors ranging from black cherry to almonds and cedar. I still love the Opus but this one didn't love me back.

"A Sheer Masterpiece"
I have the great fortune to have a stock of a half dozen of these cigars. I keep them in a custom tray in my cupboard separated from the rest. Simply put, this cigar is a sheer masterpiece of perfection. The prelight is strong of age and cedar. The slightly firmer draw is totally acceptable and the clouds of creamy sweet smoke are a marvel. The spiciness is that of black pepper and cinnamon while a hint of nut lingers throughout. The complexity of this cigar is like no other. They are also so hard to get that I'm forced to smoke 1 or 2 a year. If you have an opportunity to acquire these cigars, don't hesitate for an instant and buy them.

This was a gift from a fellow cigar lover. I torched her up and she was full-bodied with lots of complex leather and spice. The finish was long and distinct with a floral note. Great ash and contruction.

"good, but not that good"
reddish brown wrapper, tightly rolled, yet a perfect medium draw, light-grey ash, needed a couple touchups. medium-bodied, sweet smelling smoke. first half was pretty complex. good spice, nutmeg, clove, hay, cedar and some oak. second half less eventful with same woods, but not a lot else. decent, but not a great value.

"lives up to the hype"
OpusX perfextion 2
The page in my notebook reads:
Date: 11/25/06
Brand: A. Fuente
Name: Opus X
Cigar: perfexion 2
Style: torpedo
Age: 0
Wrapper: Dominican Republic [rosado grown at Chatue de la Fuente]
Country of origin: Dominican Republic
Wrapper: Dominican Republic
Binder: Dominican Republic
Filler: Dominican Republic
Ring: 52
Length: 6 3/8
Draw: excellent
Burn: good/excellent
Strength: med
Price: $19.50 Enrico's
Comments: 1st - First few hits bland then smooth flavourful smoke with no flavour dominating, grassy was slight, half way flavous got firmer but still as rounded and smooth, flavour was remarkably constant, last inche began going out had to multi-hit to rekindle but it didn't get as harsh as others, finaly went out. Remarkably constant, smooth cigar, worth the price.
Rating: 9.8
My nomal 'routine' would be to brew a pot of Dunkin Dounuts coffee, fire up some music and relax but I made no coffee and watched the USC football game on the telie. I bought 2 of the #2's at $20 each 2 weeks ago so the cigar has not aged The cigar was kept at 68% RH.
. Predraw was a bit grassy and earthly, I lit it up with my torch lighter without toasting it as I was anxious to get this famed cigar lit and get a taste of this legendary cigar. The first few hits were good [and that's about it] but dull. My OpusX began to look like a 20 dollar bill burning but just as I started to regret buying 2 instead of just 1 flavour began to replace dullness, no flavour dominated as it was an exceptionally well rounded smooth taste. The taste was a blend of earthy, grassy, leather, nutmeg and autumn leaves I've never had a cigar in which flavours were so blended together. It was able to stand alone without the aid of coffee or spirts to enrich it. The cigars taste was constant beginning to end, with the exception getting a bit fuller half way down _ same taste just fuller. I was impressed the way it remained so consistent. The draw was perfect and so was the burn until I got down to the last inche when it began going out and finally did, I didn't want to retorch when it began crapping out because I didn't want to burn the flavour, When the light grey ash grew to 2 inches I tried to knock it off but it wouldn't let go "fine’ I said ‘stay there then" at 3 inches I figured better in the ash tray than in my lap so I 'broke' it off. Well OpusX did live up to the hype unlike Ashton's ESG and yes it is a bit pricey but absolutely worth it. I called my cigar pusher to put 6 away for me that I'll be there after pay day.

I just got a couple of these and smoked the first one. Disappointment would be the most appropriate word. The construction seemed loose, which was good for draw, except it was too much, like sucking on a straw. Flavors were OK, but nothing to write home about. I would have just as soon had my every day Montecruz del negra over this overrated, overpriced stogie. Gonna let the second one age and see if some of the others can rub off, but if I'm gonna spend that kind of money, send me a Montecristo #2.

"Overrated"
After much searching I was finally able to find a store that had (real) opus x's in stock. I purchased a couple and eagerly sat down to smoke one. The appearance of this cigar was very tooth, although the wrapper has a very nice rich reddish color. The scent before lighting was woody and a bit earthish. The draw was great and produced quite a bit of very nicely scented smoke. However this is where the disappointment started. I like a strong cigar if it is flavorful, this stick was almost strong for the sake of being strong. The flavor was just a spicy leathery one and didn't impress me at all. The ash was a dullish grey but even. I am hoping to put some age on the second one of these that I bought as most people say that the flavor gets better. We shall see

Worth every penny. Nice white ash. Beautiful construction. The best way I could describe this is drinking a mocha out of a cedar cup and adding a shot of steamed black coffee every other sip. The hype is over. This stick has and will remain the standard of all belicosos to emulate.

"Great flavor, beautiful cigar"
Careful to avoid what I would characterize as "Opus X" hype, I've slowly developed a thorough appreciation for Fuente's Opus X. Like every review in this database, this review is a subjective view into my perceptions, tastes, and opinions of this and other cigars. That all said, I respectfully disagree with the prior reviewers comments - this cigar is easily a first tier smoke and I can't imagine anyone smoking one and saying it was "average." I use a Daniel Marshall and two Prometheus Humidors. I keep them at around 68 degrees and 70 to 72 humidity. I've never had a bad No. 2. Some have been "better" than others - with slight richness of flavor versus what I would describe as the typical "opus x flavor." I would strongly recommend anyone try this cigar. All this said, I must agree that after you try this cigar, if you don't love it - the $17 to $20+ you just spent will burn a bit.
Appearance - Please - there is no more beautiful a cigar - especially after these have some age on them.
Construction - even crisp burn - medium to light grey-white ash. I've smoked over 50 of these and they consistantly burn an inch and a half to two inches without fear of the ash falling off.
Flavor is wonderful - strong, but soft (especially with some age). Spicy before the light and mellows thereafter. Nice rich flavor and wonderful aroma. (unless you are my wife).
Value - Does anyone agree in this category? The cigar is more expensive than I would like, but for my enjoyment it is an excellent value.
Overall smoking experience. Great cigars.

"hype....."
I bought this big X some time ago at a time when they were over $20 if you could find one. I saw one at the Venitian for $55! I let it age just over a year. I was expecting some sort of religious experience. Nope. Difficult to light, persistant flawed burn, loose, flakey ash. Spicy, yes but also acidic and brutal. I admit that I am not a huge "power cigar" fan, but I just wanted so much more from this hyped stick. If I want a full flavor high end smoke, I'll stick with a Padron 64 maduro.

"Excxellent"
This was my first Opus X and it was a gift from a friend directly from Domenican Republic. I was positively surprised by the quality of the constructions and by the flavours of this torpedo. It looked very good, in its pale brown wrapper, it burned pretty well and the flavours, although positively non-cuban, were strong and pleasant enough, with hints of leather, pencil lead and (yes...) saffron. All in all, a nice experience, worth redoing. I have no comment on price (it was a gift), but if the average price is the one I see here it looses on value to the La Tradicion Cubana torpedo, that is 99% as good at just a fraction of the cost

"Good, but over hyped"
Don't get me wrong, this was an excellent cigar with lots a pepper and spice. It's also a little hard to find outside Vegas, and a lot more expensive than some of my other favorites. This is a very powerful cigar, almost as strong as a 100% ligero stick, and even made me a little light headed. I don't recommend this one to the beginner, but then again what beginner would pay $20+ for a cigar. I'll put a few of these away for special occasions, but this one's not going to be my every day smoke.

"One fine cigar"
When I want a good cigar, the Opus line is the only non-cuban that gets me excited. I will confirm what others have stated- They must be aged a reasonable amount to appreciate the flavour. Whenst young, they can be rather bland and harsh... With some age, they are one of the few cigars where one might taste leather, cloves, pencil lead, etc...

"A fine cigar with a long finish"
To run the risk of sounding laconic, this cigar was superb! Its physical beauty is only amplified by the complex series of wonderful flavors that can only be characterized as an Opus X. The cigar burned with a crisp even edge for nearly half an hour, turning slightly and then righting itself for the finish. The ash was soft and smooth, wanting nothing more than to remain attached to what could be described as a prince among cigars. Flavors ranged from roasted nuts to coffee, with an enduring soft finish that left you wanting more. I paid $13 for this cigar - you will be hard pressed to locate a finer cigar at this price. As the second of two of these fine cigars this month, I must say that the experience was overwhelmingly a pleasure. Take your time with this cigar, find a relaxing place to slowly draw and give the cigar plenty of time to settle down. You will not be disappointed!

"Age your Opus X"
I am not a big fan of Opus X line. I find them strong, full bodied, but one dimensional with lack of complexity. But this one actually surprised me. I found it forgotten on the bottom of one of my humidors and it has been sitting there since I bought the last box of OpusX in March of 2000. Well, two extra years of aging paid off. For those who underestimate aging of cigars, I can tell - age your OpusX. It mellowed out, got added slight sweetness and lost its harshness at the end of the smoke. The wrapper got some dark glossy spots though, which kind of spoiled the appearance, but that’s probably the oils came out, or was the result of 75% humidity, at which I age my cigars. The taste improved drastically.

"Opus X Perfection #2"
A little spice on the lips before lit. A very nice looking cigar. Easy draw. Maybe too easy. Mellow, slightly peppery, hint of sweetness. Nice finish on the palate. Not as flavorful as the Perfection #5. A bit pricey. Would I smoke another? After a year of age. Would I buy another? I would not turn one down, however, there are others in the Opus line which are better IMHO. Recommend trying one for yourself, as all ratings are subjective.
