My Father and The Call Last Night

I wanted to give everyone an update on my Dad. He seems to be doing a little better, occasionally smiles and mouths words appropriately, but still can't talk. Hospice is with him, now, 24/7 and trying to keep him comfortable with Morphine. He seems to have a lot of back pain when they turn him in his bed. I'm supposed to work 12 hours each day this weekend, but am debating whether to fly up to Texas now or wait til Monday. I don't know how much longer He'll hang in there. Any advice? My Boss at work has cleared the way for me to take as much time as I need to be with my Dad. Thanks, again, for all your prayers and support! It means a lot to me!

Don't do what I did. I was where you are now. Here I am 14 years later, and I still blame myself for not being there for my Dad. Book the flight and get there for him.

Dear Lord God, heavenly Father, physician of both body and soul, we come to you in behalf of Greg's father - that if it is your will, you grant him healing and recovery. Be with the family Lord, grant them a special measure of Your Spirit's presence, give them patience and strength. Keep them ever mindful that Christ said, "In the world you will have tribulations. Take heart, I have overcome the world." (Jn 16:33) Be with them all, grant them comfort and peace in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
And, AMEN! God's peace to you and your family, glad you are heading out to see him! I'm sure just seeing you will brighten his day! Safe journey, brother!

God bless your journey to be with your Dad, Greg.

May your time with your Dad be especially meaningful. Your presence will be a comfort to him. I am praying for God's comfort to also rest upon him and may the Lord grant all of you his wonderful abiding peace and strengthening grace. Take care, bro.

I wanted to give everyone an update. My dad passed away this morning. I was at the New Orleans airport when my brother called me with the news. At first I was upset that I didn't get to see my dad before he died, but maybe it was better this way. My sister told me that the kind nurse that cared for my dad last night was giving him a backrub after his vital signs started dropping, and he relaxed completely and stopped breathing. During his college years, my dad had worked as an orderly and loved to give his patients back-rubs. How fitting that he breathed his last after receiving a calming back-rub himself! At that moment, I know that The Lord took him in His strong, loving Arms into His Heavenly Kingdom. I remember my last conversation with my dad. I called him nearly every Sunday at 7:00 P.M. Last Sunday, when I talked to him, he said, "Well, what's up?" I told him that I had just gotten back from a trip to the Masters in Augusta. We played golf together every Saturday growing up and had many wonderful times together on the golf course. Last Sunday, my dad didn't say anything after that. He started slipping into a coma that night, and gradually deteriorated throughout last week. My brother and 3 sisters told him how much we all loved him, and that I was on the way. He had increasing pain in his back over the last several years and I know he was ready to be with The Lord. Now my dad is at peace, without pain, and forever with his Savior! I wanted to thank all of you for your prayers, support, and advice. It means so much to me to know you are there for me. Please remember to spend time with your friends and family, and always tell them how much you love them. Our time on this earth is very short, and we must enjoy it to the fullest. Thanks again to all of you.
Take care,

Greg

You and your family will be in my prayers. And I just wanted to tell you you did the right thing going to texas, You probably wouldn't have forgiven your self if you didn't go but had the option and missed him. I really hope he pulls through.

Greg,
You and your entire family will remain in my prayers.

I'm sure that the signal grace that your Dad received from God (the backrub) was the comforting sign that he was going into God's loving hands.

Thank you all for your wonderful prayers & support. It has been very comforting to me during this difficult time. I got back in Mobile last night after burying my Father in Lubbbock, Texas where we grew up. The funeral was very moving & it was a very uplifting experience to hear how my Dad's life had changed and affected so many lives throughout his 87 years. The pinnacle was talking to one of my Dad's former students from 30 years ago and hearing how my Dad had changed his life from one of a "cocky" teenager to a solid family man with a strong business and solid moral values. Thank you all again and remember to tell someone today how much you care about them.
